History of Harvard University
The Great and General Court of the Governor and Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England created Harvard institution, the first American institution. Harvard was named after English priest John Harvard, who gave his 400-book collection and half his fortune to the institution in 1639.
Harvard began with nine graduates in 1642.
The first Native American to attend Harvard was Massachusett Indian John Sassamon in 1653.
Harvard Medical School was founded in 1782. It opened as Harvard University Medical Institution the next year.
In 1817, Harvard Law School was founded.
Harvard won its inaugural intercollegiate boat race versus Yale on Lake Winnipesaukee in 1852.
Grad School of Arts and Sciences was established in 1872.
The Harvard Annex (Radcliffe College) debuted with 27 women in 1879.
Harvard’s 250th anniversary was honored in 1886 with nearly 2,500 alumni and President Grover Cleveland.
Graduate School of Education opened in 1920.
The Graduate Schools of Design and Public Administration opened in 1936.
First female Harvard honorary degree recipient Hellen Keller received in 1995.
Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences opened in 2007.
Student Enrollment at Harvard
Harvard has almost 25,000 diverse students from 140 countries. Undergraduates at Harvard College make about one-third of the university’s student body. Nearly 12% of undergraduates are foreign. Harvard received nearly 56,000 2027 applications. Only approximately 2,000 applicants attended universities for further education. The Harvard University admittance rate is 3.4%, making it quite tough to get in.
